02 Overview

An exploratory analytical project evaluating 50,000+ retail point-of-sale transactions. The study surfaces key commercial insights including product category profitability, seasonal demand peaks, customer purchase frequency, and underperforming SKU lines.

03 The Problem

Retail store chains often stock thousands of items without clear visibility into which products drive actual operating margins versus products that tie up working capital on shelves without generating repeat business.

Challenge: Lack of cross-category transactional analysis makes inventory forecasting inaccurate, resulting in either stockouts on high-demand items or dead inventory costs.

04 The Solution

Implemented structured SQL queries and Pandas statistical models to evaluate product sales velocity, average order values, and category correlations. Presented the findings in executive summary reports with clear visual distributions.

06 Key Analysis Modules

Category Revenue Breakdown

Identifies top revenue contributors across Electronics, Apparel, Home Goods, and Essentials.

Seasonal Trend Detection

Surfaces month-over-month purchase surges to support holiday inventory purchasing cycles.

Customer Repeat Behavior

Measures repurchase intervals and average customer lifetime value across segments.

Underperforming SKU Audit

Isolates zero-growth inventory items contributing to warehouse carrying costs.

Margin & Discount Impact

Analyzes whether discount promotions actually increased gross margin dollars or simply eroded profit.

Actionable Executive Findings

Structured key takeaways written for commercial teams and inventory planners.

09 Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: Inconsistent return/refund transaction tags skewing net revenue
Solution: Formulated strict SQL filter conditions reconciling return timestamps with original order IDs, ensuring returns accurately decremented the original cohort revenue.
Challenge: Identifying true repeat customers across anonymous in-store checkouts
Solution: Leveraged hashed loyalty IDs and payment token matching to accurately link separate transactions without violating customer privacy.

10 Results & Impact

Identified top-selling product categories, repeat customer retention rates, and dead stock inventory risks.

Provided actionable data for optimizing inventory reorder points and discontinuing low-margin, high-holding-cost SKUs.

11 Future Improvements

  • Automated Market Basket Analysis using the Apriori algorithm to identify frequent cross-sell bundles.
  • Integration of customer lifetime value (LTV) cohort models.
  • Interactive web report interface with automated weekly ingestion.
